and why you should be listening to BTS.
BTS plans to rise through the charts with their English sung single, Dynamite. It’s poppy, flowered with high sunlit falsettos that can carry a breeze through the heavy heat of the day.
Plain and simple, it sounds like summer.
Every so often, a single will signal the entire depth of a season. Does anyone remember the summer of 2017? Calvin Harris’ Slide feat. Frank Ocean and Migos seemed to blast air-conditioned good vibes on every hot day in every car stereo.
It was on the tip of every mind, just like this song will be as it already sits at 122 million views, and will probably hit past 150 by the end of the weekend.
“…males you think there isn’t any other place to be.”
On any given LA afternoon, the sun hits the world just right to make it look exactly like the music video. It makes the gray gum-stuck sidewalks gloss a pearl white and paint mom-n-pop shops, plaza storefronts a pastel that makes you think there isn’t any other place to be.
Candy-colored and minimalist, the sweet vibes of the song remind us that though the whole world is down and out, a new day promises another moment to be alive.
“…really living? Truly being?”
And if we aren’t grateful for that simple promise, are we really living? Truly being? If anyone knows this best, it’s BTS. Their last album Map of the Soul turbulently tackles every odd and sharp corner of the day, through angst, through rap, through ballads, and more. They explore their themes through varying genres and beats, palatable to anyone with any song in any given order.
If you remember how The Beatles infiltrated the music scene in America, BTS and other KPop groups are doing the same. And this should be normalized. Music should never be limited to your Top 40.
Music should expand, be inclusive. Music should drift into different tastes, make you comfortable to other sounds, other people. Other languages, other loves.
The seal broke when they came out with Boy with Luv feat. Halsey, and will only continue to conquer the music scene in America among other groups like SuperM, BlackPink, and hopefully many more to come.
